Chronic cough – CALM-2 clinical research study

Updates

Are you suffering from a persisting cough? The team at Pacific Clinical Research Network (PCRN) West Auckland are running a one and a half year-long study into a drug that may remedy refractory chronic cough (RCC).

They are looking for adults who:

  • Are 18 to 80 years old
  • Have had a cough for at least one year, that has not improved, or only partially improved, after medical evaluation and prescription treatments.

What is a clinical research study?
A clinical research study is a medical investigation that helps to answer important questions about an investigational drug, such as:

  • Does it work?
  • What amount, or dose, may work best?
  • How safe is it?
  • Are there side effects?

All new medications must undergo thorough testing in clinical research studies before they can be prescribed by doctors to people. Without clinical research studies, no new medications would be developed, and few medical advances would be made

About the study

The study will include up to 675 participants and will take place over the span of 1.5 years. Before the study starts, there is a screening period where you must visit the study centre to see if it is suitable for you, and whether you would like to participate.

The study involves regularly taking the study drug or a placebo and completing regular check-ins to monitor your health.

Pacific Clinical Research Network New Zealand has put together a video providing an in-depth explanation of the study and what is involved. Watch it here.

This study has been approved by an Institutional Review Board (IRB)/Ethics Committee (EC), which protects the rights, safety, and wellbeing of the participants.
